North American VA Sightings June 2008! (Continued)

Robert Bockstael and David Fraser Scream Mayday!

Robert Bockstael (Prince Diamond) and David Fraser (Grandpa Hino) were both seen in the same episode of Discovery Channel’s air tragedy docudrama, Mayday. They appeared in the episode Gimli Glider, which was all about the tragedy of an Air Canada jet which was exhausted of it’s fuel supply. Robert played Captain Pearson, and David played Robert Hewett. The Captain was a lifesaver as he was able to fly this plane and land it safely as it was gliding. David also appeared in the episode Runaway Train in 2006. These episodes are more than likely to rerun since the show is on almost every day, so watch out for them on your local TV schedules!

While We’re Talking About Robert Bockstael…

Robert has a couple appearances in some big productions happening very soon! On July 1st, a movie called Time Bomb will be released straight to DVD. It’s a war-themed movie about a father named Jason, who lost his son when his SUV exploded. Now he is in Iraq, and the constant suicide bombings around him remind him of his son. An army scientist approaches him about an experimental virus that would create a squad of suicide bombers they could use against the enemy. Uncertain if he has already been infected by the virus, he must struggle to decipher which explosions are real and which are in his head. Robert has a supporting role in this movie as Black. Trailer can be seen here! Robert is also busy with his new role as a Principal in Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning, a brand new TV movie based on the beloved books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. From what we have read, this story tells of Anne’s life before she came to Green Gables. Look for this to air sometime later this year on CTV!

Tidbits:

☼ Rino Romano (Tuxedo Mask #1) has a role in a new Mel Brooks cartoon, Spaceballs: The Animated Series. No word on when it is going to air in the United States, but he will be the voice of Lone Star. The show premiered earlier this month on Canada’s Super Channel.

☼ Wendy Lyon (Queen Serenity) plays Sally Rainfield in the TV Movie Mayerthorpe. This one is based on the tragic story of four Mounties which were killed in the line of duty while stopping a drug operation. The movie aired last February on CTV.

☼ Sabrina Grdevich had a supporting role in the Lifetime Movie Matters of Life and Dating (Originally Titled “A Very Lucky Girl”). The movie about a woman’s journey to re-enter the dating scene and repair her life after a battle with breast cancer aired last October.

☼ It turns out Vince Corazza (Tuxedo Mask #3) was the class clown! Read this hilarious thread for more information!

VA February Update!

Hello Moonies! This flu is still biting at me with it’s last few withered splinters, but I am finally well enough to catch up with Sailor Moon news! I’ve also been busy with a new job in web site creation, so that has also kept me from doing things for Moon Chase. But now things are a bit easier with reading week ahead of me! I want to take this time to thank The Me again for getting the new commercials channel set up on imeem and for uploading several weeks worth of commercials for you all!

Stephanie Morgenstern’s Pilot Picked Up By Major US Network!

As of last week, the Writers Guild of America’s strike had ended. However, before that, networks were faced with a problem, should the strike have carried on for longer. What were they to do about the upcoming television season? Many turned to Canada, where the writers were not on strike, and signed deals with many Canadian television productions. One such production was one that we have been following since last fall, Flashpoint (A.K.A. Sniper and Critical Incident). Stephanie Morgenstern (Sailor Venus #1) and her husband, Mark Ellis, created the show and are also writers for it! We are incredibly happy that finally, fans across the border can also catch this sighting, as CBS is the lucky network who has picked up the first season’s 13 episodes! Most times, a former VA will appear on a Canadian television show and their fans in the United States are unable to catch them – unless a pilgrimage is made to Canada! Flashpoint is the first series since Due South to be sold to a US network! The show has been in development since 2005 and got the greenlight for a pilot last summer. CTV greenlighted the drama last December. CTV has put a video preview of the show on their site, however the link appears to be broken as it takes you to a video of Canada AM. We will as always, keep you informed on future developments of this show! According to a press release, Flashpoint is about “an emotional journey into the tough, risk-filled lives of a group of cops in the SRU (inspired by Toronto’s Emergency Task Force). They’re unique cops that can do what ordinary cops can’t: rescue hostages, bust gangs, defuse bombs, climb the sides of buildings and talk down suicidal teens. Members of a highly-skilled tactical team, they’re also trained in negotiating, profiling and getting inside the suspect’s head at the very emotional breaking point (the “flashpoint”) that triggered the crisis. They’ll do whatever it takes to diffuse the situation to try to save lives – all in a day’s work.” Congratulations again to Stephanie and Mark!

Emilie-Claire Barlow Nominated for a Juno!

A few days ago, Emilie-Claire Barlow (Sailors Mars and Venus #2) celebrated on her blog by announcing that she had been nominated for a Juno Award – Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy! Last summer’s The Very Thought Of You is currently nominated for Vocal Jazz Album Of The Year. The awards will be handed out on April 6th in Calgary, and will be televised on CTV. We wish Emilie-Claire the best of luck! Emilie-Claire has also been nominated for a National Jazz Award (for Female Vocalist of the Year)! Fans can have their say in these awards by voting for their favorite. Reg Schwager, a jazz guitarist who has also played with her, has also been nominated for three awards, Guitarist of the Year, Musician of the Year, and Instrumentalist of the Year! Click here to vote! And for those of you who still haven’t heard Emilie-Claire’s music here, here are links to iTunes, Snocap, and Fusion III. Emilie-Claire just returned from a trip to Japan and fans can read all about it at her blog!

Charlie Bartlett Finally to be Released!

Nearly a year ago, we reported of a new movie featuring David Fraser (Grandpa Hino), In just five days, this comedy will finally be released in theaters! We are happy that finally a release date has been announced and we really look forward to seeing this comedy about a teenager who becomes a kind of psychiatrist to his school mates. Fans can check out a trailer here at Apple, or the movie’s official site.

Go North American VAs! This is truly your biggest year YET!!

Fall VA Sightings!

Liza Balkan Performs New Piece in Festival!

Liza Balkan(Sailor Mercury #2), performed a new piece this weekend at Toronto’s Second Annual Lab Cab Festival. Out The Window is based on the aftermath of witnessing a death on the street. Something happened. The official description from the site reads: 6 years, two trials, a coroner’s inquest, a verdict and 100s of pages of transcripts later… questions remain. About truth. About sight. About the act of the witness. Liza is a director, actor, dancer, writer. Who saw something. She thinks. One critic enjoyed it and hailed it as one of the pieces not to miss. Liza directed the Pajama Game at the Bathurst Street Theatre, and can be seen next directing Bunnicula this Christmas. Fans can visit the official Lab Cab Myspace here!

A Rubeus’ Presence is Felt on Wayside!

Wayside is a Canadian and American production which started this summer on Teletoon and Nickelodeon. They are based on the popular series Sideways Stories From Wayside School by Louis Sachar. Wayside School was accidentally built sideways with one room in each of the 30 stories instead of 30 rooms in 1 story. Viewers join the new kid Todd, as he tries to make his way in a school where it’s okay to fall asleep, cows roam free, and class elections are decided by a game of… dodgeball? The series is popular among kids in both countries and we wouldn’t be mentioning this if there wasn’t a VA involved! Robert Tinkler (Rubeus) is a writer for this cartoon.

Rino Romano Has Two Narrating Gigs!

Rino Romano (Tuxedo Mask #1) is still continuing his role as the Caped Crusader on The Batman – which will begin its 5th Season any moment now! But Rino also has two roles in which he is narrating. The first is for the second season of Curious George on PBS Kids. The second season is focusing mostly on engineering concepts, like building a treehouse and plumbing, because every kid needs to know how to do these things in everyday life (pfft. who needs adults?). In March, Rino narrated The Story of the 2006 Diamond Bar Wolfpack , a documentary which followed the Jr. Midget Wolfpack Football team. In 2006, they were completely unbeaten through the season! The film was a winner in a worldwide Digital Video competition in June! Fans of Rino Romano can purchase this documentary on DVD and can watch a sneak peek here.

Charlie Bartlett Finally Has a Release Date!

Last May, we told you of high school comedy Charlie Bartlett, which features David Fraser (Grandpa Hino) as Dr. Jacob Kaufmann. We had read everywhere that the film was going to be out last month, but it wasn’t to be found. Just recently, it was announced that the film will come out on February 1st, and the movie has an official website too! Even though the release date is so far away, we can’t wait to see this movie about a teenaged boy who turns into a quasi-psychiatrist!

Spot that VA in Bakugan Battle Brawlers!

Bakugan Battle Brawlers began on Teletoon last July, and we finally got around to watching an episode ! To our surprise, a few VA’s are involved in the dub of this anime. Bakugan Battle Brawlers (or simply Bakugan in Japan) is about kids who pick up cards featuring different characters, environments, and powers. They make a game with these cards , but they do not know that these cards correspond to an alternate world called Vestoria. Soon the kids are pulled into a quest to restore balance to Vestoria! Starring in this show are: Julie Lemieux (Sammy, Peruru) as Runo, the tomboy who uses light attributes, Emilie-Claire Barlow (Sailor Mars #2, Sailor Venus #2) as Alice, who doesn’t battle but advises the other brawlers, and Lyon Smith (Sapphire) as the masked Masquerade, who wants to help the Dark Side win over Vestoria and Earth!

And Finally…

We dug in the vault of old Sailor Moon articles and found a very old interview with Stephanie Beard that comes from the Globe & Mail – just as her career was starting to take off in 2001. Stephanie reveals a few tidbits about her aspirations and childhood in this interview! Sugar fans should give this a read, they may learn something new!

Stephanie Beard

Question: As co-host of YTV’s The Zone, what star-like demands have you made in your contract?

Answer: One big rule — I can’t work with puppets that are bigger than me. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been scared of life-size puppets like Gonzo and Miss Piggy. My other demands included normal stuff like the newest Powerpuff Girls toys, a year’s worth of ice cream and a steak sandwich.

Q: Mansbridge or Robertson?

A: Neither, actually I was thinking more along the lines of ET’s Jann Carl.

Q: You have the nickname Suga Baybee now, but what did they call you when you were a kid?

A: In my family growing up, my brother and sister called me “Chub-a-lie” ’cause I was really chubby and I made up a lot of stories. My mom called me Princess Piglet, but just Princess when we had company over.

Q: Which cartoon character, past or present, would you have liked to do?

A: I always had dreams of being in an animated movie. I was able to accomplish that goal by playing Louisa in the upcoming animated feature, The Santa Claus Brothers, a new animated holiday special based on Michael Bedard’s images (from Nelvana) that will air on YTV this December. Now, I have a mission to be the voice of Maggie, from The Simpsons, when her creators decide to let her speak!

Q: Recently you snagged a role on The Red Green Show. How are you going to handle all the testosterone on set?

A: The real question is, “How are they gonna handle me?” I may be little, but I pack a lot of power. I’m like a superhero, my superpower is my genuine smile makes the boys weak every time.

Q: Which of the dames on Survivor would you most like to mud wrestle with?

A: It would have to be Elisabeth. People always seem to compare us I think I could take her.

VA Sightings May 2007!

We’ve got quite a few sightings for everyone to look forward to in these summer months!

Live Action Theatrical Movies:

Already in theatres is The Lookout , a psycho-crime movie about an aspiring high school hockey player named Chris (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who during a night of drinking and reckless driving with his friends, crashes into a combine. He is left with a brain injury so severe he can’t remember much for long periods of time, and writes things down in a small notebook so he can remember. He works as a night caretaker at a bank, where he attracts the attention of a gang of bank robbers. Chris befriends their ringleader, who in turn introduces him to a young woman, and he falls into the plan. Later, he realizes he is being used and tries to stop them. Critics generally liked this movie and has the distinction of being one of Rotten Tomatoes’ highest rated movies of 2007. David Huband (Serena’s Dad) can be spotted in this movie playing Mr. Tuttle, the bank’s manager.

And the Sylvester Stallone sequels keep on coming! Last Christmas , Rocky Balboa was the movie to see. A year from now look for John Rambo , featuring the Vietnam veteran helping some Christian Missionaries get into Burma to assist the oppressed Karen people. When he gets them there, they are ambushed by the Burmese army, and some missionaries are murdered. The ones that are survived are taken captive and it is up to Rambo to save them! Now a while ago , Kevin Lund (Nephlite) was nowhere to be found. However, our persistence has paid off and we found him! But fans won’t be seeing him in this movie, but his name will be in the credits as a writer for the film! So that’s where he’s been hiding all these years!

Kevin is also writing the script for Vivaldi, a film based on the romance of the famed composer and his muse. What’s even more exciting is that the producer of this film is the legendary Brian Grazer, famous for such productions such as the hit TV shows 24 and Arrested Development, movies like The Da Vinci Code and Cinderella Man, and a whole bunch of other things! . The movie will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who recently directed The Nativity Story.

To be released this August is Charlie Bartlett. Anton Yelchin plays the namesake character, who is a wealthy teenager who appoints himself to be the school psychiatrist (heh, who needs med school these days). Eventually he takes his own advice to get him through his angst-filled teenage years. This dark comedy received rave reviews upon it’s debut at the Tribeca Film Festival just over a week ago! David Fraser (Grandpa Hino) appears in this movie playing Dr. Jacob Kaufmann. Fans can view a trailer here and can spot David in the trailer near the end saying “All I ever hear these days is Charlie Bartlett told my son this”, pacing about in an office.

TV Movies and Shows:

Absolution aired late last year on the Lifetime network and is going to be re-aired May 14th in the afternoon – check your local listings! Samantha Mathis (who once played Princess Daisy in the Live Action Mario Brothers Movie) stars as Bettina Lloyd. Bettina is a New York journalist who returns to her hometown to investigate a comatose man who can heal people. She figures it’s a con until she has an experience that may change her mind and her life! Norma Dell’Agnese (Prisma) can be spotted in this flick as a receptionist.

Sarah LaFleur (Sailor Uranus) played Emily, a naturalist trying to keep rowdy teenagers safe in Lake Placid 2. This made-for-TV movie was a sequel to the Croc-shocker hit Lake Placid (1999). Instead of one crocodile, now there are three in the lake seven years later. This movie was probably a huge hit with teenagers when it aired on the Sci-Fi Network on April 28th, but did not bode well with critics. No word on when (if there will be) the DVD will be released.

Sarah is also currently working on a pilot for a new series from popular British Comedy writer/director/producer Victoria Pile. This show (working title: Untitled Victoria Pile Project) will be a comedy set in an American Police Precinct. Sarah plays Detective Maria Fantozzi and stars alongside Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander and comedian Orlando Jones. We’re not sure if ABC will air a sneak peek of the pilot as they did with the other pilot she shot last year, Our Thirties.

Music CDs:

As we reported earlier, Emilie-Claire Barlow will be releasing a new CD of Jazz Tunes on June 19th! . Via her blog, she announced the tracklisting of The Very Thought of You, and has also posted a few preview tracks on her official MySpace! We encourage fans to hear the multi-talented Emilie-Claire sing in English, French, and Spanish! Fans should be able to purchase the album on iTunes close to the release date, or they can pre-order the album here. Special Thanks to Emilie-Claire for permission to use the image!
