Introduction: The mysterious photographer (AKA Emily’s other half)

Hey everyone, my name is Blake. I’ll be joining Emily as the photographer in tow at Anime North this weekend. I honestly haven’t seen too much Sailor Moon, but am a geek at heart and a big fan of anime. I was raised on a steady stream of Bruce Lee, Voltron, and later on got into Dragon Ball and such. I can still vaguely recall watching Macross Plus as a kid, just loving this crazy style and universe that was unfolding.

As for Sailor Moon, I caught episodes here and there, not typical stuff for a growing boy to watch, but gave me a view into the variety that anime can cover. Other than that I am an avid gamer, love comics, sci fi and fantasy, and have done my share of table top gaming and RPG’s.

As for this weekend, I hope to bring some crazy cosplay to you, some insightful video, and maybe even some commentary afterwards.

I look forward to sharing this amazing time with you all!

PS, if any of you are aspiring photographers or in the business, feel free to look me up on Google+.

I Have Been a Sailor Moon Fan Since: 1998

Favorite Episode or Movie: Episode 34 of the original, 30 in the dub- I like both versions, but the visual of the crystal appearing from Usagi’s teardrop with My Only Love playing in the background is particularly memorable for me. I also think 166, the finale of SuperS, is seriously underrated; am I the only one who thinks it’s cool that the big bad of the season turns out to be gravity?

Favorite Sailor Moon Character: Sailor Venus. She’s crazy in such a special, lovely way.

Other Anime or Manga I like:
Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Fate/Stay Night, Claymore, Durarara!!, Card Captor Sakura, Ginban Kaleidoscope, Ghost in the Shell, Eyeshield 21, Love Hina, Azumanga Daioh, and uh, there’s lots more- depends how I’m feeling when you ask me.

Other tidbits: I also write for Japanator.com, and am attending this year’s Otakon in a decidedly Moon-Chasey capacity. I want a snazzy boxset of all 200 SM episodes pretty badly- well, actually I wanted that pretty badly ten years ago. Now I’m past wanting it “pretty badly” and have moved on to uncharted territory.

I Have Been a Sailor Moon Fan Since: 1995 or 1996

Favorite Episode or Movie: Episode 30 of the first season’s English dub–”A Crystal Clear Destiny”. I taped the Dragon Ball Z movie, “The World’s Strongest”, off of Toonami back in ’99 or 2000. When I watched the tape later, there was a Sailor Moon episode that got taped along with it because I didn’t know how to program the VCR’s stop-time. That episode would be the only regular access to the Sailor Moon Anime I’d have for the better part of a decade.

Favorite Sailor Moon Character: Sailor Mercury. She’s cute, smart, and the origins of my attraction to the “bookwormy-type”.

Other Anime or Manga I like: Anime: Trigun, Fooly Cooly, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Dragon Ball Z, School Rumble, and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time movie. Manga: Bleach, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Naruto from the U.S. Shonen Jump magazine, Rosario + Vampire, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Death Note.

Other tidbits: I was late for school on a regular basis because of watching Sailor Moon. I don’t regret it. The English theme for Sailor Moon usually gets daily playback from me because of its guitar solo. I don’t subscribe to the “change-everything-from-the-original-dub-back-to-the-way-the-Japanese-version-had-it” mentality for a Sailor Moon re-dubbing. I want any re-dubbing of the show to be a hybrid of both the English and Japanese versions.

I Have Been a Sailor Moon Fan Since: late August, 1995
Favorite Episode or Movie: The Sailor Moon R movie
Favorite Sailor Moon Character: I’ve always liked Sailor Moon’s honesty and her ability to see the good in everyone.

Other tidbits: I run Sailor Moon Snipits, which has been online since 1998; I co-run a Sailor Moon guild on Neopets called Guardians of the Moonlight; and I write and illustrate a fantasy comic series for teens called Green Corner, which has an art style that is somewhat influenced by Sailor Moon and Dan DeCarlo (Archi Comics). Oh, and I’m Canadian :)
